Finding our cycling spirit  

Whilst we regularly talk with you on our blogs about how to find you fit and our selection of the world’s most comfortable cycling shoes, every now and then we need to press pause and to remind ourselves what cycling is all about - seeking freedom and adventure. From that very first moment when we rode away from our parents, free of stabiliser’s, we’ve been independent - albeit with varying levels as we’ve grown older and chosen the form of cycling that matches who we are.  

And we’ve used our bikes to explore the world and to explore ourselves. We’ve ridden epic climbs in the Alps, Pyrenees, and maybe also along the epic and quite beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway in the USA. We’ve ridden dusty trails in Tuscany, raced unbounded on Unbound, and we’ve tested our bike handling skills on epic mountain bike tracks all over the world. Yes, cycling has given us all so much, and we’ve had the opportunity to share those moments with friends. Ultimately, we are a community of cyclists and we inspire each other.  

Lake cycling shoes began life over 40 years ago, on the shores of Lake Michigan, close to Chicago. The all-new Lake CX178 utilises drip down technology and knowledge from our higher performance shoe ranges, to deliver modern performance in a price point for all cyclists. It’s designed with an emphasis on anatomical efficiency and everyday comfort, drawing on our 40+ years of innovation in cycling shoe manufacturing. Built on a redesigned last featuring a broader toe box, it’s another Lake cycling shoe option that supports natural toe splay and reduces compression for improved stability, alignment, and long-distance comfort. Combined with Lake’s proven nylon composite sole and a lightweight microfiber upper, the CX178 balances those all-important requirements of adjustability, breathability, and durability—making it a versatile option for both casual and competitive riders.  

In terms of the upper, we understand better than anyone how durable this needs to be, whilst still ensuring that you benefit from our legendary and unrivalled cycling shoes comfort. The CX178 upper is constructed from durable, stretch-resistant microfiber, with precision cut ventilation ports along the forefoot and midfoot. These ports promote airflow and moisture management without compromising structural integrity. On a hot summer day in the hills, your feet need the opportunity to let moisture out and air in. And the anatomical shaping of the upper complements the reengineered toe box, reducing compression at the medial and lateral forefoot, allowing the toes to expand naturally under load. This design improves comfort while maintaining a secure, performance-driven fit.  

In terms of that secure fit, here at Lake there are no shortcuts. The CX178 comes with a BOA® Fit System L6 dial. The L6 dial provides fast, micro-adjustable tension across the mid-foot, and the system ensures an even pressure distribution and quick entry/exit while keeping overall shoe weight low. Combined with the supportive upper pattern, the BOA closure delivers a glove-like, secure hold throughout the pedal stroke, ensuring that your hard work is converted into power performance. The stiff and lightweight nylon composite sole provides efficient power transfer with controlled flex for all-day comfort on the bike. And the outsole includes 9mm of toe-to-heel cleat rail adjustability and extended midfoot positioning, allowing riders to fine-tune cleat placement for biomechanical efficiency and reduced strain. We’ve also designed in expanded sole ventilation channels to improve airflow, while oversized heel and toe walking pads help to increase traction and durability off the bike.
